Amsterdam

Amsterdam

I am an online shopping junkie, especially when it comes to books. I buy books compulsively, and as a result I have a very long queue of books I absolutely “must read” since I have spent so much money on them. I am really bad when it comes to borrowing books from the library. I always forget to return them on time and end up paying many times over what the original book actually costs. I couldn’t resist browsing Amazon.com. I get free shipping; as a result many of the books are significantly cheaper than at the bookstore. The website recommended I check out several titles by Ian McEwan based on my shopping and browsing history . I was impressed by Ian McEwan’s Enduring Love so much that I decided to buy not one but two more books by him, Amsterdam, was one of them. Read more…

I am an avid fanfiction reader and sometimes writer. While interacting with other readers and writers in the fanfiction world, a name was brought to my attention more than once, Ellen Kushner. It tickled my curiosity and prompted me to buy her famous Swordspoint novel. I have just finished it and wanted to write my impressions while it was still fresh in my mind. Read more…

Wide Sargasso Sea

Wide Sargasso Sea

What a captivating, interesting book! Jean Rhys managed to create a tense, mysteriously haunting world in very few pages. The heat, the smell of orange blossoms and sweet cinnamon all assault your senses as you read Rhys’s fantastic account on the mysterious woman in the attic from Bronte’s Jane Eyre. I am deeply captivated by this author’s take on dementia and people’s reaction to others suffering of that affliction. Afro-Caribbean traditions and prejudices play a significant part in the plot, I recommend that you read up a bit on the history of the West Indies and Caribbean before taking up this book in order to understand it fully. Enduring Love

Enduring Love

So, I cheated.

I am deeply ashamed. I have not finished the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy yet, but I have read another book from my list, Enduring Love by Ian McEwan. I will explain how I came about finishing this enthralling novel and how I came about the book in the first place as they are both interesting stories. Read more…
